Default Suspect issue with bottom end seizure, misleading dealer? Picture included

I am helping a friend rebuild a kx 65 for his son. He has had the bike since new, but I believe he ran it without premix and locked up the big end rod bearing on the crank. I tore it down to having to split the cases and let the owner decide where he wanted to take it to split the cases and install new crank bearings, crank, etc. Dealer just called him and said there was other bigger issues, that the bearing came apart and gouged the case. They are washing their hands of it. I cannot see these marks happening from that. parts would have came out the top of the motor, and I am sure it likely would not have turned over with something big enough to cause it. Looks like pry marks from them trying get the halves off the crank to me.

If I am wrong, I will certainly admit it. just seems fishy to me.

    Thoughts?

looks like the bearing housing has been resleeved, looks like steel instead of aluminum. I've never seen a steel liner in a motorcycle if that is so. I don't see the spot you're talking about?

Sure looks like a tool gouge to me. A bearing coming apart wouldn't leave a single mark like that with no other evidence.

Looks like a tool gouge to me too. I have never heard of anybody trying to pry a case off of a crank. I have split a lot of cases and rebuilt a lot of lower ends over the years and never even thought to pry the case off the crank.

Is that the outer bearing race? And they don't want to deal with getting that out I presume. Gouge can be cleaned up I would think.

I explained to him how that could or not happen and after going to pick it up, the dealer is fixing it, and giving it back to him as we gave it to him, except with new parts installed. Said they could file it down, smooth it, fixing it. I believe they realized the gig was up.

At least i am not crazy.

Bruce, i cannot tell from the pic, with the shadow, but i believe that is the case itself. The bearing is still on the crank. From my understanding, the bearings are press fit on this motor, so it is not quite as simple as some of our KTM's.

Hopefully, we get it back, together and rotating smoothly.

Dealer is fixing what, looks like the bearing was totally froze up and came apart leaving outer race inside the case, the 2 gouge marks are the least of issues, what ever caused them.. Its getting that outer race out looks like the Quagmire.
