Default FREE Mod to do to your Carb's Slide for better running

I will attach some pics of a mod I have been doing for a few decades on slides..

This helps with starting, idling, and low throttle runability.

It is very easy to perform using a burr or a diamond jewelry file..

I would recommend doing this mod to your slide on ANY 2 stroke engine.

    You will notice a difference!

    True.
We did that on Bing carbs on Maicos in the 70's.
A great way to crisp up from 0 to about 1/8 throttle.
Just don't get too carried away as you can't put the chips back on.

I did this to my Mikuni on my 2018. In my opinion it made the biggest difference and greatest improvement of any of the adjustments I made to the carb/jetting.

I did it to Mikuni's on my Husqvarna's in the 80's to lean them out, .5mm (.020") at a time max.

Are you changing the cutaway or just ruffing it up to create more turbulence? Maybe both? Waving a dead chicken over it while reciting voodoo chants? Please explain.

I assume it is the cobby finish you are going for.

    Kels, need more info!

which side did you file? Looks like you did the engine side notch a bit and also the airbox side?

How much did you open the notches?

I did this (engine side) with my mikuni TMX38 as well and it worked, but a few millimeters actually makes a big difference, too much and you will need a new slide!

From what I felt, opening up the engine side notch richens it a bit from 0-1/8, (note you will need to reduce idle speed quite a bit!). Your low end torque will be smoother and you will probably notice more spooge.

Opening up airbox side of slide leans it out (not sure where on throttle as I didn't experiment with this).

Correct me if I am wrong, as I am no expert!

The slide cutaway is just "rounded" and I put a little channel in the center towards the needle.

I mentioned in another thread.. You can grind the air box side of the slide A LOT and it will usually never have any negative effects, only positive. I have never found a slide to have too much cut away.. usually, not enough.. increasing it always would yield gains, especially at higher elevations.

The MAIN and effective mod is on the reed side of the slide. I increase the "notch" then grind in a reverse funnel from the notch to the needle... Then round all sharp edges with a radius. Air or liquid does not like to flow over sharp edges.

Kelsey, this is for Keihin and Mikuni correct?

Looks like you're removing a lot more material along the back side. Are we talking about just a small notch (GREEN AREA in below photo) or small notch and also a lot of material removed from the back of the slide as well (BLUE AREA in below photo)?

This video example is just a tiny notch.

EDIT - Reading everything over again, and looking at the photos... you're removing a significant amount of material on the airbox side of the slide and then a small notch on the reed side. Got it.
