Recently I've been using the Shinko 546 front 90/100-21 fatty with a heavy tube at 11psi. Mixed condition off-road riding and a small amount of road and it's performing and wearing well. No sign of side knob tearing after 20H. Just another option to consider...

+1 about 25 hours on my 90/100 546 and ZERO signs of cracking at any knobs. A little rounding but not much. Ridden in mixed dry conditions from silt, sand, hardpack and tons of rocks and a very solid performing tire.

I have a Shinko 546 front , with a 505 rear on my TE250. It's ridden here in Central Utah. All single and two track trails that are hard pack and rocky with peat gravel strewn on top. I currently am pushing 30 ours on this pair. I've gotten more service out of this combination than any other. Still not ready to change after this time and abuse.

I have a rare (i do believe) Shinko Fatty 90/100 with a 54R (high speed rating) hard terrain with a very recent build date (Feb. 2019), running 12psi
600 miles (about 20 hrs ?) kind of early to tell but so far no side knobs torn
mix of slimy wet pacific northwest singletrack which is easy on tires except that all the rocks, if you can find them, are very sharp Basalt, and gravel roads and pavement
I have a theory that I can tell by the smell if a tire is gonna chunk. If it smells up the garage like a bike shop, no chunk.
Extremely satisfied with the slippery wet handling. Best wet terrain tire I have ever experienced in slimy rain forest.
Was also excellent in Oregon desert soft silt but all this is on a huge 501 beasty

I noticed if the tire gets a bit old and maybe it was shipped in a hot shipping container (?) in summer, it seems to dry out the "rubber" compound and looses some of that wonderful "new tire smell". I have seen new tires on the rack that even start looking less shiny black.
IMO any tire that gets old or got stored for an extended period in extreme heat will loose knobs prematurely.
However this does not rule out the "manufacturer defect" factor , its just something I look for when buying off the rack at a shop. Online you get what they send you.
This Shinko I just got was fresh as a daisy, it had a nice aroma and looked shiny black, and had a recent build date, so I hope I got lucky and the Manufacturer quality is not the problem
