I'm not sure what size the pistons are.

Missing out on a big group ride this weekend and this is when I get annoyed and open up my wallet and take it to the shop.
    Replace the caliper piston seals???

Add me to the list of riders trying to sort out a front brake that is solid on the initial pull, but slowly fades on long downhills as the lever moves closer to the bars.
Question: if there is no fluid loss at the MC, can it still need a re-build?

yes. Loosing pressure is a key indicator that the mc needs rebuilt. Make sure you clean it out and inspect the bore before reassembly.
