Thread: Finding Avenza maps?

    Default Finding Avenza maps?

I love the Avenza app for my phone. Works amazing but the worst part is finding the maps.

Anyone had good success finding motorized maps or FS maps? I try searching, MVUM, the FS name, etc. but it is still tough

In the USA I know that the USDA site has free OHV/Avenza maps for some areas and here is an example

    https://www.fs.usda.gov/main/mendocino/maps-pubs

Don't know about the BLM or other sites in the US cus I'm in Canada.

There is one area I go to in BC that gives you good PDF maps when you become a one time member ($25) and IMO I had not use Avenza before this and the trail maps for that area a re great and worth the $$$.

Avenza also uses GPS Co-originated TIFF raster maps but IMO both the PDF and TIFF maps are really hard to come by.

I believe my buddy who lives in Oregon got some good trail maps for his areas through Avenza and I can ask him how he search if you want?
    I
On many long journeys have I gone. And waited, too, for others to return from journeys of their own. Some return; some are broken; some come back so different only their names remain.

I forget how I did it, was somewhere in settings, but you can unselect about 90% of the map types that come up so the only maps visible are recreational in nature

Check the Avenza store in the app. Lots of maps available there.

Would love to know what you did there. Didn't see much in Settings.

The store app has too many maps. Its difficult to find the MVUM or Forest Service maps. The search function doesn't seem to work very well.

Maybe check with your closest ranger station. Here in Utah they handed me a piece of paper with an outline of the state with QR Codes posted around the state for each region. You just scan the QR code and it downloads the map for that area.

This page is a good starting point for downloading FS maps for Avenza: https://www.fs.fed.us/recreation/pro...ohv_maps.shtml

I recently used the Avenza app on my phone to ride an area that I had never been to before. I have to say in over 50 years of relying on maps and memory, it was the best trick this old dog has learned in a long time! I have better luck finding the Avenza map for an area by Googling ie: " Kootenai National Forest Avenza Maps" vs trying to find in the Avenza Store. Once I get on the Avenza page, I filter for free. Apparently they don't have all MUVM's online for all areas which are free. Hope this helps.
