Default New 2020 65SX and have a few questions

Last weekend I drove 3 1/2hrs away to Lake Cycle in Michigan to get my son a new 2020 65SX. When we got home, of course he was dying to ride it and I wanted to get it broken in for his race this weekend. After I installed the hour meter, he rode it around the field by our house and put .3hrs on it. I noticed that it seemed slow to rev? It slowly got better as he rode it but I couldn't help but notice it. The next day he put .6hrs on it in the field and it got a little better as well. Still seems kinda slow to me? His other race bike is a 2008 65SX with 35hrs on a complete bike/engine rebuild. This bike seems like a demon compared to the new 2020. The 2008 screams and revs up quick while the 2020 seems to rev slower and is much quieter. I have always ran 50:1 premix in 91 octane and I know both bikes specify 95 octane with 60:1, but I didn't think this could change the running characteristics too much. His old bike has stock jetting and we get 15+hrs on a plug without issue. My son is a WOT kid too, so it's not him being too easy on the throttle. Also, the 2020 came with another carburetor needle, whats this for? I appreciate any help, I just want him to be successful racing his new bike this weekend!

Probably just jetting. Start leaning it a little and it should clean up.

I’ll start with the jetting. I guess I was just a little surprised at how it ran bone stock. This is my first brand new dirtbike purchase so I have a learning curve to work on. Also, I will be switching from Amsoil Dominator to Interceptor premix and at a 60:1 ratio. Looks like the Interceptor is made specifically for exhaust valves.

Considering that you’re asking about “another needle”... it’s best to dump all the fuel that came in the bike and have someone jet the bike as per the manual, or learn how to do it

Run 5n13 needle 2nd clip from top 220 main and 20 pilot for 0 elevation. If your kid is wot run 40:1 motul 800. We ran 110 octane race gas mixed 50:50 with pump. You cant compare the 2008 to the 2020 the 2020 will rev slower off bottom because of power valve.

All the 2 stroke bikes at the dealer came with a plastic tube with an additional needle, factory KTM. I was just not told why it was included. I am fully aware of how to jet a carburetor. The bike runs fine, just seems “slow” to rev compared to his 2008 65SX without a power valve.

Thank you, I believe you are correct, you just cannot compare the two. We went to practice tonight at the same track he always races at. His lap time are down EIGHT SECONDS PER LAP. To say I was shocked is an understatement. The bike now has 3.2hrs on it and runs great, just different than his 2008.
