Thread: Help with KX85 jetting.

    Default Help with KX85 jetting.

I got my son a 2016 KX85. Super clean, low time bike, but the jets were all a little varnished from sitting, so I put a rebuild kit in the carb.

    700' elevation, 50°-60° OAT

    140 main jet
    Needle on 3rd clip position
    42 pilot

It came stock with a 38 pilot, but I had to turn the air screw all the way in to get it to rev clean off idle, and I could turn the screw all the way in and the bike doesn't die. It runs the best all the way in, so I went to a 42 pilot. With the 42 pilot, I have the exact same symptom. The bike runs best with the screw all the way in. All other RPM ranges, the bike runs great. Ive checked for air leaks all around the carburetor and everything seems to be sealed up well. I just don't see a 42 pilot as being too small. What gives?

I see the KX85 uses the same 28mm keihin PWK as a 85SX. I don't know your answer but I am using an aftermarket 28mm PWK on a 200 and it also likes a large pilot jet and small turn of the air screw. I'm using a 45 pilot with AS at .5 turn. Maybe it is just as oddity of the 28mm PWK. One possibility is the AS coil binds the spring so it is not really closed???

Well maybe I should step it another another pilot jet. It’s just not making sense because with the air screw out even just a fraction of a turn, I get a bog. It just doesn’t seem like it should need that much pilot.
