Default Michigan ORV Trails, Recommended Tires

I have a 2002 250SX and need new tires next spring. What are recommended tires for the Michigan trails? I've had the same tires on my bike since I bought it in 2005! LOL. I ride 3-5 times per year.

Everyone I know runs a Pirelli scorpion pro front and a trakmaster2 rear, we are all street legal and these are DOT, I also used them for enduro's and hare scrambles but mostly single track now.

I lived in Newaygo about 2 miles from Big Air Motocross for a few years until recently. I used Maxxcross SIs on an RM161 and a 200XC because I bought 6 sets before I moved to MI and just used what I had. I mostly rode ORV trails, occasionally a few lukewarm laps on the track and twice in the dunes. They sucked in the dunes (Anything other than a paddle on the rear sucks there anyway). They were OK on the track but hooked up great on the trails. Heavy duty tubes and around 7-8 psi in the rear without any pinch flats. Durability was good but I try to use momentum instead of brute power whenever I can. For what it's worth, I'm usually the guy that everyone thinks is running at least one degree softer tires than everyone else. Must be because I've always ridden Eastern single-track in North and South Carolina since I was a kid. Hell, I had S12s on my 200 until they wore completely out when I first got to MI.

I have used the Kenda Trackmaster 2 for DOT compliance but a Dunlop MX33 or MX12 is a solid choice for when I ride around the St Helen area. I think my dad runs the MX33 with Tubliss on his Wr450 and likes it as well. We have never had trouble running a non DOT tire.

I looked at what tires I have on my bike now and they are are Dunlop 773ís front and rear. I bought the bike used in 2005 and have never replaced them. I didnít ride at all from 2011-2015. There are lots of chipped off pieces and need to be replaced. All of my riding is in Michigan. Trails only. What would be the advantage of buying different brands front and rear. Isnít it easier to by same type of tire front and rear?

Trakmaster 2 front sucks, rear is good for everything.

No reason to run matching front and rear tires on a dirt bike.

I've run quite a few tires, and keep coming back to the Trakmaster rear. Just works well in sand, and DOT legal is a plus. As others have said, I'm not a fan of the front. It's probably been 14 years since I ran one. What I remember is in sand it felt like the front washing out.

For fronts I currently have a Shinko fatty, which has worked very well, but is splitting side knobs at 21 hrs. No bueno. Probably go Pirelli Scorpion next. Also really liked the Kenda Southwick II up front, but road manners are odd once it has some miles on it. Parker DR front was surprisingly good on road and off. The center rib of knobs seems to keep on road turn in better than the Southwick, which squared off then feels like a car tire.

In my opinion a huge range of tires work very well in Michigan. Tire choice was much more difficult in Arizona, where it needed to work in sand, pebbly cover hardpack, and not get shredded in sharp rocks. I can tell you when I moved there my go-to Trakmaster didn't stand a chance. Ended up on Maxxis IT deserts because they survived.

I bought a new Southwick 2 for $10 and tried it worked good in the hardpack but wallowed in the sand. Checked my tire psi and found the digital gauge said 12 but my old style all said 8, aired up to 15 psi and rode a sand loop and it was like riding on rails. Being on a 280# 4 stroke and 195# rider I believe the front tire wasn't able to bite because the weight was steering it instead of the tire and airing up eliminated the wallowing.
