Thread: Ibex front tire: anyone run one?

Default Ibex front tire: anyone run one?

Anyone have experience with the front ibex?

Would really love to hear some solid feedback on it compared to a 216 fatty or m59. Been searching, but didnít find much on it.

Figure itíd do good with rocks? What about everywhere else? Mud and slick wet conditions?

I ran one at the Little Brown Jug Enduro in Buffalo, SC this past Labor Day weekend. Their trails are mostly clay-based with some rocks and plenty of roots, a creek that gets crossed many times and a bit of sand here and there. The IBEX front traction was really good on the clay, the rocks and the roots and I didn't notice it doing anything weird where the soil was sandy. However, I ran pressure that was too low. I've run Kenda tires for years and found their other tires work very well with lower than typical pressure, given how stiff their sidewalls usually are. For example, on Millville II tires, I run 10 psi rear and 8 psi front, 9 psi and 7 psi rear/front with their Southwick tires. I found the IBEX rear works really well on clay-based soils at 10-10.5 psi, so I ran the front at 8.5 psi, but I could feel the tire sidewall rolling under when applying strong front-wheel bias in turns. If there was a berm to rail, it wasn't an issue. If I was trying to get the front end to stick in a relatively flat turn, I could feel the tire squishing/rolling under. I suspect somewhere around 10-13 psi would've been a better choice. The knobs are just as soft as the rear, but the sidewall is also quite soft. I'll run it again in those conditions for sure, just with more air next time.

I can't compare it to the tires you mentioned, as I've never run them since I've been a Kenda rider for over a decade.

How does the Ibex front compare to the M59?

I haven't tried the front Ibex yet but I love the rear Ibex.

I put on a 90/100 Triple Sticky last fall an really like it. Maybe a little better than the M59 and I like it much better than AT81 or Shinko 216 (hate both of these).

Here is another vote for the 90/100 Triple Sticky on the front. I like it at least as well as a M59 and it lasts much better.

I've been jumping back and forth between the Ibex front and Triple Sticky. Both awesome tires. The Ibex is flat out magic in the rocks and roots. So good in the roots, one can get lazy and hit them at odd angles. Even those downhill 45 degree roots that bite you get eaten up with ease. It's a soft tire but is also quite forgiving at speed, even in the sand, it's way better than one would expect. Given that, the Triple Sticky also works incredibly well in the technical just not as good in the roots. Triple Sticky is quite a bit better when the speeds get up.

As for life, the Ibex front lasts quite a while without a hint of tearing. If you ride a lot of gnarly, you owe it to yourself to give it a try. I think you'll be impressed.

Sounds impressive to be able to hit roots on a downhill angle as these are the things that still catch out even the best of very experienced riders? How is the ibex in mud or wet clay in general and in off camber tricky situations as this is what is the gummy rears weakness. Is it exceptable and does it pull up tend to slide on downhills?

    +1
It seems to work well even in conditions where you'd think it wouldn't. And lasts longer that you'd think it would given that it's trials tire soft.
And - it's a great stud tire w / 1/2" Koldkutters in it. that soft carcass remains relatively soft even when temps are cold. More comfortable than the usual 'hard as a rock' winter tire.
It's sensitive to pressures though, too low & it'll feel imprecise & wallow around some.
