Elevation change from startup at home to riding site around 500 feet. I had a tip over and the bike stalled 100 meters into ride. Restarted it and rode another 50 meters in deep snow where it died. Will have to get throttle body out of bike so I can see if oil comes thru the little brass fitting attached to the throttle body.

It's like you wrote on your first post, you didn't warm the bike.

TPI's with bad warm up tends to do that,no surprise here.

I've seen some similar cases in my dealer and a they are a lot in facebook on TPI owners page, you can check whatever you want and do well to do so but believe me it's not an oil issue.

This weekend i rode with mine with -3celsius 26F during good part of the day.

I carry my bike on a open trailer running speeds from 140 to whatever km/h for about 40 miles when i run certain places like this weekend....so bike gets really cold!!!!

Always start it with cold start button , let it idle for a minute or so, close it and ride really gently untill it gets warms up.

With this low temperatures it needs much more some time to get it at the desire operating temperatures and its a got idea to warm it with the bike stopped for a while as the air is so freezing ( we normally run it for 2 miles or so untill petrol station and go after that so it's ideal), put you hand on radiator and feel it it's warm, if it is you are good to pin it.

Don't have much experience in above 25F but around this temps or lower having a radiator blocked in the TPi just untill it gets warms seems a very good idea for me.

Why does a TPI need longer to warm up than a carb. bike.

I have read they inject more oil when cold and it knows the engine temp?

You would think the TPI would be much safer than a carb. that was jetted for a higher temp.

I'm not a troll, just doesn't seem like it should be as important on a TPI.

My opinion (and as someone said previously): This problem was the result of the piston ring locator pin falling out.... or the ring pushing the pin further into the piston. Investigate. I had this happen on a KTM with a carb. The ring then rotated until it caught a port and all hell broke loose from there. In my case it happened on the line of a GNCC race, bike would not start.... my brother and his boys push started me and I rode the race with one ring. The other ring and PIN must have blown out thru the exhaust. I am NOT kidding!

Morals of the story: always use 2 ring pistons! KTM motors are tough as hell. **** happens

Warming up a bike is just common sense..

Why be and *** to the OP, he stated that he warmed it up for a couple of minutes.

You have firsthand knowledge of a bike blowing up when not properly warmed up.

Why not give all of us the proper warm up procedure for a TPI.

I have read that you should not take off the thermostat form a TPI, does the XC have one?

Give the guy a break he just lost a lot of money.

Iíve always been a proponent of doing a proper warm up. Having the bike idle for a few minutes isnít my idea of doing it properly. I run my bike through the years at low throttle, low revs for at least the first km. And then build it up from there. I donít think this is a tpi issue per say. More a case of a tight new motor being gassed too quickly for the conditions

"A tight new motor" ??? He has 62 hours on it and John is not slow.
