Default Rear tailight/brake light stopped working

    2016 KTM 350 XCFW

The only thing I've done recently is reroute my GPS cable from the right side of the handlebar to the left side I am not sure if my rear tail light was not working before this or not but just noticed it last weekend.

I have jumperd both connections separately to the battery and the light and brake light work.

Headlight works fine I am not an electrical Guru so PLEASE HELP!!!!

    Thanks
    Gary

If headlight works and no taillight running light there should be a white wire at the headlight that runs back to the taillight check for broken wire or damage, your bike did not come stock with a brakelight switch that's aftermarket.

Do you know how to operate a multimeter? https://www.harborfreight.com/11-fun...ity-61593.html $23 and you can learn Ohm's Law....or at least do some continuity tests.

    Thanks for the replies.

Yes I know it does not come with a brake light I put that on.

I put a jumper wire on it from the brake light connection to the battery and started the bike and the light and brake light work.

It's very hard to do a electrical diagnosis online, when you applied the jumper only one light should come on a time. Is the running light working now?

Check the wires from the battery area to the light. They will sometimes get chaffed/pinched by the subframe, subfender, etc.

Yes I jumpered the white wire to the positive on the battery and the brown wire to the negative and the light came on and then I pressed on the brake pedal and the brake light work to with the light still on.

This was near the subframe connector, then I remove the connector by the headlight and tried the same thing but no light and the wire got really hot!

So then I went back to the connector that worked before and it got HOT so I called it a night as I didn't want to mess anything up.

If the wire's getting hot most likely you have a bare wire touching the frame.

It is good you quit for the night. Heat is bad. It suggests you have a short in a unfused circuit. Taking power direct from the battery is OK but there are better ways. You are hopefully using a LED brake/taillight. LED will not draw much power so you can tap into an existing circuit for power such as the headlight, that circuit is already fused. Sounds like you need to run new wires from your source of power to the brake light switch, to the brake light and for the tail light. For ground you can run a wire from the brake/taillight to any clean spot on the subframe. Power to the lights will come on when the motor is running and go off automatically when the motor stops.
