Thread: Clutch basket failed

  1. #1

    Default Clutch basket failed

So the clutched basket sleeves failed on a 2019
    85sx 67hrs 2nd clutch

Question is will that need full engine rebuild
Due to damage from metal or just clean out and replace clutch with new parts ?

And how do you remove centre hex nut when there is nothing left to grab..??

Pulled the two tabs from said nut but nothing left to grab to stop basket from spinning

put bike in gear with chain attached to rear wheel, hold rear brake and break nut loose

Those sleeves are pretty thin and known to break. Nihilo makes a set that's much stronger.

I'd spit the cases and clean out the transmission really well. Also see if the bearings are still smooth or need to be replaced. Odds are you'll be ok, but you definitely want to get in there to clean and inspect. Metal shavings in a bearing wouldn't end up good.

well the bikes still in bits

full strip down replacing all bearings as the amount of metal in the gear box was huge..!
and if you want to rebuild a clutch in Australia you need to order practically everything from the factory in Austria Ö.

I never would have guessed it would fail like that. Do the 85ís use a thinner pin than the big bikes? I canít remember how thick my boys 65 pins were when I rebuilt it.
If I were you, Iíd closely inspect all the gears, and replace all the bearings in the engine, crank bearings should not be affected by this damage.
