I wash the inside of the Air-Box. One of the first things I do when I buy a used bike.

I see no reason to clean the airbox on any kind of regular basis as it is the filter that matters. Of course in some cases you can have major mud intrusion (high speed crash in a mud pit---don't ask), and then one should clean the airbox.

While air filter is still in place I give the air box a light spray with carb clean and wipe it out. Just to keep big chunks from falling in during filter clean. If not, over time the filter oil becomes quite thick with dirt and continues to build up.

I just make sure there's no dirt clods waiting to drop into the intake when I pull the filter.
