    Default Dungey out for 2021

Dungey announced today that he will NOT be racing in 2021. Seems with everything that is going on he could not find enough sponsors to support his comeback so he has decided not to return to racing. Probably the best in my opinion since he retired as a champion it's time to move on while he is still healthy.

There is so much good talent moving up to the 450`s i think it`s wise for him to stay retired.

Will he still ride Honda? I think he would represent Honda well. Either way I hope he is at the races or involved in racing. Dungey is great for the sport. I believe it was a wise decision not to race. At this point leading a team or being a mentor/coach would be a better role for him.

In a Dream World Suzuki would announce they are solvent and have an incredible new Line-up of Bikes with more power, less weight and legendary cornering with a modern Full-Floater that makes KYB look like junk. And that RD would be the Manager! Now, Back to Reality............

He also realised how much he would have to give up to go back racing.
It's not like he's the sort of person to go into it half-hearted.

There's always off road. No KR, so he could take that KTM slot.

That’s not why he abandoned his comeback.

He abandoned it because he couldn’t find the support he felt was necessary.

A large part of that is because OEMs are reluctant to give up so much control. Dungey wants absolute 110% control of his team top to bottom. Access to factory tech with zero political strings attached.

    Personally, I like his approach.

But throughout his career he made a LOT of people in the industry uncomfortable due to how straight edge his program was. He upsets the industry status quo by taking the sport as seriously as he does.

Many within the industry long for the days of the frat boy McGrath/Emig era. They’d like to hold onto some semblance of that for as long as possible. For better or worse, this sport is old school still. Hasnt “grown up”. And thus wonders why it struggles to maintain corporate sponsors other than energy drinks which are every bit the “party” most corporations try not to be.

Dungey’s legacy aside, i cant help but focus on the fact that he couldnt get the support from an OEM he was seeking is a bad sign of just how far this sport still has to mature.

You’re assuming Dungey decided he wanted to return to racing but it took him several weeks or months to realize how much work it would require?

    LOLOL

He’s one of, if not the most, dedicated racers the sport has ever seen. He knew what he was getting into the moment he started to entertain the concept of a comeback.

What he did not properly calculate is that he’s a bit of a social pariah within the sport and that would cause it to be harder for him to gain access to factory tech than he expected. The “industry” does not appreciate Dungey and never will. Unfortunately.
