    Default TPI bog 1st/2nd gear before motor seized

    KTM 300 TPI 2018, unknown hours and history.

    Since purchase (3months ago) the bike has always had some hesitation but recently got much worse, in 1st/2nd gear 75% of the time the bike would be a blubbering boggy mess while in 3/4/5/6th gear the bike was almost normal with only a little hesitation before the PV opened.

    Originally when it was explained to me I expected it to be an electrical issue and if you watch video 1 it sounds exactly like some of the original coil issues when water got into them however it doesn't explain how higher in the gears it will pull much better and eventually get through the hesitation to ride normally.

    10 minutes after the second video above the bike seized, piston skirt has snapped. Oil pump seems to function fine when primed and no air in the line.






    Can anyone shed some light on what would cause this sort of failure? From what I know the most common cause of a piston skirt snapping is fatigue which is possible given we do not know the history of the bike however is it possible the failure is related to the bike not running correctly?

    At first it sounded like a carbed 2 stroke running lean. But then the broken piston skirt makes such a mess it is hard to tell if it was a 4 corner seizure or possibly even the wrong year piston installed causing the skirt to hit the crank. which is what the second picture looks like with the bottom blown out like that.

    Yep, hard to tell, as Victor says. It does not look anything like an oil pump failure, though. If that is the correct piston, it was just WAY beyond its service interval. Stuff like this is why I always recommend putting a fresh topend in any used bike a person buys.

    i dont think theres much side loading on the exh side of the piston. so having it broke seems to indicate it smashed into something

    Very black. It was fouling plugs almost every ride.

    Are the reeds intact? It is odd that the intake side looses a chunk out of the bottom side of the skirt like that.
    Plus "bad reeds" run worse at lower RPMs than at higher RPMs, kindof like you described.

    Yes reeds are fine however they were replaced approx 6 hours ride time before this happened due to a snapped petal.

    The previous (original) owner of my 2019 300 TPI took the top end apart while trying to fix the stutter. He found an undersized piston that KTM installed. He put the proper sized piston in and put it back together. (didn't fix the stutter)
    Would an undersized piston cause enough piston slap to eventually break the skirt?
