Picked up another 11 year old bike.

Doing a refresher on it with some upgrades. Should make for a project.

If it was that clean when you bought it I would expect it to sell for near $5K this year of crazy prices.

My dog thinks the newer bikes are way better. I agree with earlier posts that its the pilot not the plane. Fly Navy, the Best Always Have!

My mate runs a 2002 400EXC RFS. It still performs very well against the modern bikes. I actually prefer that motor over the current 350 it pulls off the bottom better chugs better and still has a nice top end. The big difference we notice is the later bikes have much nicer forks and we are considering an upgrade to 2008+ OC 48mm. I'm trying to convince him to upgrade as I can see a time when RFS parts will be harder to get but he hasn't ridden anything yet that he thinks is enough of an improvement to be worth the changeover price.

I'm a professional bike wearer out, as much as I loved some of my older bikes, I need to be able to buy stock parts to keep them tight!

I have a 2014 500 exc. After my first day of riding it, my thoughts were, that this is the first bike i have ridden that handles as good as my 490 Maico. First that is also as smooth and easy to ride as my 490. ----- I also think that my 1987 KX 500 was faster and had better suspension(stock).

BUT,.......there is NO WAY I would go back to riding those old bikes. They were harder to start ( I love estart), the exhaust noise was horrible, the vibration was horrendous and maintenance was a constant never ending ordeal. I tracked my maintenance time for a year or so back in the early eighties and figured that I worked on those bikes for more hours than I rode them. Not just the Maicos, they ALL required lots of work to keep going.

Aftermarket support has greatly improved. I sent the shocks off my 440 Maico to works performance. What I got back was soft, mushy and nearly unrideable. I had a few 2 stroke exhausts that made the bikes slower and harder to ride (FMF--procircuit). Krause racing ported my 490 Maico and then it wouldn't pull 5th gear on flat level ground. By contrast the KREFT suspension on my 500 exc is incredible, and most all aftermarket things i have bought in the last 10 years made a noticeable improvement. That was NOT the case a few decades ago.

It is sometimes hard to see a lot of improvement in 10 years, but it's there!!
